The correct thing to use is a mix of de-mineralised water and a suitable antifreeze, such as that specified by Saab. If you just top up with water, you are diluting the water/antifreeze mixture.
I use de-mineralised water mixed 50% with Mercedes-Benz coolant. This coolant is recommended on the Townsend Imports site. However, any other good brand of antifreeze should be OK. I'm told that one that does not contain phosphates is much better for the life of your engine.
I have seen it said here recently that some types of antifreeze don't mix well with others and the resulting mix can damage your engine. Someone said not to mix green antifreeze with orange antifreeze. I don't know what to make of this, as the Mercedes product I use is blue...
