If the ABS light is on, then the ABS function is disabled. It disables itself when it detects a fault. Just ignore the light.
As Eric says, you don't want to pull any fuses here. The ABS pump provides brake boost (power assist). You don't want to try driving the car without brake boost.
I usually don't see a problem with a dirty sensor. Most of the problems are due to the cable from the sensor getting worn or kinked. Unfortunately, since the cable is part of the sensor, it's the same thing when it comes to replacing them.
The fact that someone worked in the area does make one think. Here's a question - Start the car and let it idle, and after a few seconds the Brake Fluid light should go out, followed by the ABS light a few seconds later.
Now just sit there - don't drive anywhere. If the ABS light DOESN'T go out, it's probably a sensor problem. If the ABS light goes out, but comes on the second you start moving, it may be a sensor problem, or it may be a reluctance wheel problem. The sensor reads a toothed gear, called the reluctance wheel. As Eric says, if someone screwed it up while replacing the CV joint, that could be the issue. It could be as simple as they forgot the wheel, or it went back wrong, or is just gunked up.
Good luck!
