I recently had the light come on occasionally and intermittently. I decided that since there are so many possible causes, I would take it to the dealer for diagnosis (I have a dealer nearby) and then fix it myself. I generally don't use the dealer, but they have their uses occasionally.
Diagnosis at £20 (US$30) told me the problem was with the right front wheel sensor. I won't buy a new one unless it's absolutely necessary, but I expect to find it loose or the connector dirty or the cable damaged or something. If the worst comes to the worst I can get it elsewhere for £50 less than dealer price and fit it myself for £70 less than dealer labour rate.
It might be worth getting the codes read if you can, then you know where to look and can decide whether it's worth fixing.
As other people have mentioned, the light might be telling you that you're going to lose power assistance shortly so you need to know what it's saying to be sure you don't get any nasty surprises.
