... you might want to install it first, so you can have an ECU tuned for it (if the tuner you choose makes a distinction). I have done more or less everything now except the ECU, since I was sure I'd want the 3" system, K&N, etc. eventually.
As well as increasing top end performance and helping reduce lag, the larger exhaust should help keep exhaust gas temperatures down. These will increase with the extra power output from a modified ECU and make things a bit harder for the engine.
The 3" downpipe is very beneficial, since exhaust gas temperature (and hence pressure) is greater near the turbo. Further down the pipe, the gas is cooler and denser, so doesn't occupy so much volume and doesn't need so much cross-sectional area for the same flow.
Some people have gone for a 3" downpipe and a 2.5" system from the cat back, and they report it works almost as well as a full 3" turbo-back system.
