Starter replacement is a 1 hour job (once you locate the starter - its below the intake manifold on the back of the engine)

If you buy a cheap rebuild starter be sure to keep the reciept and make sure they have a warranty.

Haynes manual is an important asset and may help wou with your electrical problems. I'm not sure I agree with the previous post - my timin chain makes a similar sound occasionally and when I had the valve cover off several months ago the chain looked ok (though wear is difficult to gauge just by looking at the chain - I was able to dperess it only a little.) A good SAAB mechanic should be able to tell you for sure.

Another source of engine rattle is either poor engine mounts (you would feel these though!) and a loose spark plug cover (this can rattle quite a bit!)
