My friend JJ, who contributes frequently to this board, would surely
corroborate what I'm going to say about 9000 automatics. Their
bad reputation has more to do with driving habits than inherent
faults with the ZF unit. JJ changes his ATF (synthetic) yearly.
Also, he never lets upshifts or down-shifts occur at wide-open throttle.
He knows when the shift-points occur and lets his foot off of the
throttle before they do. When down-shifting, he never floors it. Rather, he manually selects the lower gear, lets the transmission
drop to the lower gear, then applies power. I should mention, by
the way, his engine has been modified to well over what a stock
automatic aero achieves in boost and horsepower, and he has
well over a hundred thousand miles on it while never experiencing
the 'unreliable' tag that seems to have been placed on this transmission. I'm of the opinion that driver knowledge of how
automatic transmissions operate goes a long way in explaining
the 'unreliable' rating that the 9000 has inherited. Even the 200 hp
version of the 9000 produces prodigious amount of torque. Using
that torque with wild, thoughtless abandon on the bands internal
to an automatic will cause any automatic or their owner, grief.
