You don't buy a 200+ HP car just so you can wait in between shifts. The whole point of a reliable automatic transmission is that you CAN floor it when you want to floor it and not have to worry about either shifting or longevity. Why even GET an automatic, if you are going to shift it manually?
'Well over a hundred thousand miles' does not count as anything above average reliability in my book. Now if you mean 199,000, ok then. In my car, the transmission went out at 120k, making it the first major repair item, and also the most expensive. Do you think it's acceptable for the first major repair to be the most expensive part of the car? I do not.
No offense to Saab, but my brother's two Fords (94 Taurus and '99 F150 4 x 4) both have vastly superior transmissions to the 9000, which really shouldn't be a big surprise since the Saab automatic dates from the mid-late 80's. Heck, I remember our '69 Impala also having a better shifting and more well behaved automatic than the 9000...
