The upper 'mount' or dogbone is actually a torque rod - it controls engine movement. There are two lower mounts for the engine on the right hand side. There is one more mount under the transmission, but it tends to last OK.
Visual inspection is the best method. If the lower mounts go, the upper tends to follow shortly. Check the rubber bushings in the upper torsion bar. A few small cracks are OK. If the rubber is cracked through, the bushings need replacement.
If you open the hood and sight straight down by the front right edge of the engine, you should see the forward engine mount. It looks like a rubber circle with a bolt coming out of it. Look under the car, just forward of the wheel - you'll see a metal can coming down through the subframe, maybe 3 inches across and a couple of inches high. That's the bottom of the mount - use that as a way to sight. The rubber should be in good shape, with no signs of cracking.
If you have an automatic transmission, open the hood and start the car. From the driver's seat, sight below the hood so you can see the top of the engine. With the parking brake on and your foot firmly on the brake, put the car into reverse, then neutral, then drive. The engine will move some. If the top of the engine moves forward more than about 1/2 inch going from neutral into a gear, then one or more mount is probably shot.
If you have a manual tranny, while driving in a lower gear (like second), hit the gas hard, then back off, while resting your hand on the shifter. Does the shifter move appreciably? If it does, it implies the mounts are tired.
Good luck!
