I ditched the reverse lockout mechanism on my 92 9kt as well. it can make 4-5 shift a little vague if you don't let it 'find' it's way. I'm considering making a shift gate for it, although I've adapted and haven't blown a shift for a long time once I got used to it.
I used a Type R plated aluminum knob, along with an aluminum sleeve to take the place of the lockout. It looks great and definitely stiffened up the entire shaft. The knob had to be drilled out to fit over the saab shaft, no big deal.
overall the car shifts a lot better, and I think the increased mass of the knob has really helped smooth out shifts quite a bit.
Since you're not changing the length of the lever on the OTHER side of the fulcrum, you're not going to be any damage unless you're crunching gears, which we all know can be done with ANY length shifter. Shortening the shaft and increasing the overall mass has improved the shifting feel and performance noticeably for me.
