Is this crazy, or what!
The story, and you tell me:
Yeasterday, I took my '96 9K Aero into a shop that I have used in the past to have them fix the leaking windshield washer reservoir, and to have them change the oil; actually just 4 weeks ago I spent $570.00 on the belts and tensioners, etc. Additionally, and for the past 2 months I have been wanting to replace the spark plugs, which I typically do myself, but have not made the time to do so. So I figured I would have this shop replace them at this same time. I was hoping that the leaking reservoir was due to a bad check valve, and that the cost would be minimal. So I asked for a call and cost estimate prior to them proceeding. They called and informed that the oil change was $29.50, it was the check valve and the part would cost $14.00 with a half hour labor ($32.50), and the plugs would cost $17.50 and ONE HOUR labor at $65.00/hour!? Therefore, and you do the math yourself, the total cost to change the plugs would be $82.50!? I was shocked, and told him that this seemed quite excessive, that I could buy the plugs myself for +/-$9.00, and it would take me 15 minutes to replace them. So I told him not to proceed with the plugs. He then said, and I quote, "we have already have done it, so we'll take them out, put the old plugs back in, and in the future you can have your car serviced some where else"! Granted, I do realize that there may be a hour minimum, however, that was not posted as such, as well as, one might think that a half hour for the check valve, and a half hour for the plugs woudl equal one hour TOTAL, not 1.5 hours. To me that would be justified, and acceptable.
Anyway, sure enough, I picked up the car with the old plugs in, and will take it elsewhere in the future. My office mates think that I was crazy to have them take the old plugs out, but I am hardpressed to spend $82.50 for new spark plugs! What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Bill
