but my point was that you can't really compare what it costs doing it yourself to having someone else do it. Take an oil change, 4 quarts of oil at .89 a pop, a three dollar oil filter and it takes ten minutes. Do you really think anyone could stay in business charging $10 for an oil change? But that's about what it's actually worth. The mechanic in question definately sounds a bit too pricey, and I'd definately look elsewhere, but you have to bewhere of going to far in the other direction. If you find a good, honest mechanic, cut him some slack once in a while, send him business and hope he survives. Good ones are hard to find.
