Today I got bored and went over to the Good Guys to find something to spend a $100 gift certificate on. I came home with a pair of Boston FX3 (3.5" coax highs) speakers and a pair of Kenwood KFC-1738C (6.75" 3-way coax) speakers. I dug out an old Coustic 2x45w amp went to work.
What I had prior is a Pioneer 835R head unit and a P300 single-disc CD player in the dash. Tape and CD and a spectrum analyizer that fills the dash nicely. The front speakers are Boston Acoustics Rally separates (4" mid, 1" tweeter). Since I don't spend much time in the back seat I didn't care much about it, and while completely bass-less the system sounded pretty decent from the front seats - until the rear left speaker started rattling and driving me nuts.
All the new speakers fit beautifully. I originally installed the front separates because of their fit, and the new FX3 are a perfect fit for the -'92 rear tweeters. The new Kenwoods are the "oversized 6.5" size and are a perfect fit for the 6.5"OS mids. No cutting, no drilling, all very nice. I stuck the "new" amp under the front passenger seat - the input came from the Pioneer's rear pre-amp and the output to the new Kenwoods. The front Bostons and rear Bostons are powered off the head unit - at 20w RMS it's plenty.
End result? Pretty darned nice. The Bostons are about what I expected - decent. I think they were $70 or so and they do a perfect job of keeping the front and rear balanced, which is how I like it. The Kenwoods do the job admirably but they are fundementally a cheap speaker (again $70). Still, they brought some bass back to the party although I think I want to try and find a dedicated mid instead since the Bostons are making the highs... seems silly to have a 3-way speaker for bass. But, it's what they had at the store and I wasn't paying, so.... :) Tomorrow I am going to play with the Coustic's crossover and see if I can't make it better. If I can't, anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced 6.75" mid? Cerwin Vega makes one - for $300/pair!! :) That's a bit more than I will spend on a squeaky ol' 9000... :)
