Motor mount diagnostics

Sorry if I'm asking a silly question.
A few weeks ago I checked my motor mounts. Removed right fender line, put a lever between engine body and subframe and raised the engine. I found that rubber isn't separated, but upper part of muont seem free to raise (of course there is resistance at the lever, but how can I say it's due to weight or to mount?). In other words, when engine goes up the rubber doesn't stretch, but it's still in one unique piece.
Front and rear mounts were in this same shape.
I did this check because shift quality seems not good enough, and there is something that I call "resonance" when I play with gas pedal (on-off) (I "feel" the engine moving and banging under the hood). Plus, this winter I noticed that torque rod bushigs were shot and I replaced them, but I didn't cared for lower mounts at that time.
The question is: are my mounts really bad?
I'm asking this because I've just seen in Quasi's site this picture
http://quasimotors.gar.net/front%20mount%20positioning.htm
in which you can see that upper part of the new mount and rubber are not toghether, just as in mine.
Can someone explain me how a lower motor mount fails, and how a new on is?
Thanks
Stefano (Italy)

PS: Sometimes it's also difficut inserting first gear at lights, and also removing it when starting the car, if I left it in first. Visually inspected, the shift coupler is solid, the two parts of the rod don't move one toward the other.
Can this be related to motor mounts?
