Joe,
What he's talking about is "aluminized" exhaust components. They're made out of regular steel with a thin coating of aluminum which helps to prevent corrosion.
People have differing opinions of aluminized systems. Personally, having lived until recently in a northern climate where salt is used on the roads in winter, I hate the stuff. Put genuine Saab aluminized mufflers on my 9000 twice and both times they failed within 2 years.
On the other hand, stainless steel is much more resistant to corrosion. Depending on the exact material, it can also have a much better appearance, which is why it's often used for tailpipes and rear mufflers. Downsides are much greater cost, and it can get brittle and crack when exposed to very high temperatures.
For my '97 9000, I've decided to go with stainless from the cat back - the cooler part of the system. When it's time for a frontpipe (the part that gets really hot), I'm going to do aluminized (the JT 3").
