Just thought I would let you all know of last nights success story...
I've got a 919kT that I've had for a couple years, and the only thing making is a perfect car for me was that the steering wheel was too far in; I'm 6'6" so this was a problem. Since this year does not have a lever to change the telescoping depth, I thought I was screwed. It would be very tight for my right leg between the steering wheel and stereo shroud. I'd thought of everything from moving the seat beyond the mounting points, to relocating the pedals.
Well, last night I found that you CAN change the depth on non-telescoping models. It appears the telescoping mechanism is actually there but is just fastened in place with a nut and bolt, rather than a release mechanism. The factory setting on mine was about 1/2 way between fully out and in (towards the middle setting).
Here's my little "write-up". I can give you more info if you want.
To get at it you have to remove both the top (where the hazard button is on a 91) and bottom plastic pieces behind the steering wheel (not the bolts that hold the SRS package in place). These are the same ones that surround the ignition switch.
Looking in from the top (directly beneath the gauge cluster) you should be able to see the bolt and slide mechanism. I was a bit stumped when loosening the nut to find I still could not slide the wheel out. Well, there is a "stay" washer that keeps the wheel from sliding even if the nut is loose. This needs to be either removed, or rotated around. I just rotated it, and left it in place. Once this is accomplished just pull the wheel out (or in) to the desire position. I was able to slide out about 1.5 inches. Tighten the nut, refit plastic pieces, and you're in the buckwheat!
