Blown front speaker???

Driving home yesterday, I noticed a crackling noise coming from the front speakers during some deep bass notes. After fiddling with the Balance and Fader controls, I narrowed it down to my front passenger speaker. Obviously, it's blown or is almost gone.
My question: How come when I put all the input into just the front driver's speaker, it all sounds fine, but when I put it all into the front passenger's speaker, I hear the crackling and popping coming from not only that speaker, but also from the driver's front too? Does a small amount of input still feed into the opposite side when putting it all to one side? Or is it an audio illusion, much like a "surround-sound" effect? If a small amount does go to the opposite side, why am I hearing that speaker pop when playing with the bad one, but doesn't pop when playing by itself?
Since it looks like I need to put in new fronts, is it best to just get a replacement for the bad one from a junkyard? Or buy 2 new ones from Saab? Or just go with a different-make speaker? I do like the sound of the factory Saab's (I assume they're Harmon Kardon--I have the HK system), but will a different set sound even better?
Thanks much!!!
Joe
