The conversion between R-12 and R-134 involves changing EVERY O-ring (coolant compatibility issue)in the system and adding a different style of charging hose connector/adapter to both of the fittings on the compressor. Having said that, it is also highly recommended that the receiver/dryer and the expansion valve are changed, as well as the compressor oil. Some shops will not fill a system that has not been converted by them, so it is best to check in advance if you plan to have someone else vacuum and charge the system after your conversion.

As far as difficulty, it is a piece of cake provided you are used to working on your car. The only really aggravating part for me was the lower hose on the condensor. (Access issue, the center lower air deflector plastic has to be removed to get to it and then it is still not easy.) Note that is it VERY common that the hoses on the condensor are corroded [for what ever reason, SAAB used steel nuts on aluminum fittings and electrochemically, that is a no-no in a high electrolyte (salt)environment]. If that is the case, usually the condensor, and often the hoses (Al tubes) will have to be replaced.

eEuroparts.com sells conversion kits as well as the driers and expansion valves.
