Because of the punitive Fed tax on R-12, around here in upstate NY it costs in excess of $150 to simply charge a system with R-12 - that is if you can find someone to do it. If all goes well (see previous post) the cost of the conversion and the R-134 charge is less than that figure - and the environment benefits (sooner or later in the life and death cycle of the car, the A/C coolant is going to end up being vented to the atmosphere).
There is some evidence to suggest that R-134 is less efficent as a heat transfer medium than R-12 and newer compressors and systems are designed with higher efficiencies to compensate. However, R-134 works just fine in most older systems when the conversion is done properly. When problems arise, it is usually because the old system had contamination that was dislodged by filling with the newer coolant (remember the O-ring materials compatibility issue)- that is why it is recommended that the oil, dryer, and expansion valve (small orifice) be changed when converting.
