you could buy the erikson and put it in yourself. I don't know how adventurous you are but removing the manual transmission from my '87 9000 was mostly a matter of unbolting hardware and unplugging wires. $50 for a set of metric wrenches and sockets and another $75 for jack stands and a floor jack and you're ready to go(That's how I approached it last summer and the car runs now). In fact I imagine that it might be easier to remove and replace the transmission in a non-turbo automatic... no turbo plumbing to mess around with and no clutch to worry about either.
Everything I've heard indicates that, if well maintained, these cars will run for a long time. Unfortunatley the wear I see on my '87 is predominantly rust and interior wear. The engine mechanicals are fine. Don't worry about the heater core. Unless you're in Alaska it won't be cold again until September at the earliest. With regard to that job I don't think there's anything techincally difficult there either... just removing stuff, replacing stuff that's broken, and then putting things back together.
Good luck.
NT Moore
