You can't treat a car like an investment - if you put money in, you expect it to increase the value of the investment. Cars lose money - it's the fourth law of thermodynamics.
It doesn't matter how much the car is 'worth' unless you sell it. What's it worth to you? If the tranny is dead, it isn't worth much. If you put a tranny in, it will be worth more, AND you can drive to the store. But you need a car to drive, not an investment vehicle (pun intended). If you didn't fix the car, can you find an equally clean car with an equally known history, with a KNOWN good transmission for $3500?
If you intend to keep the car, buy a good transmission. Eriksson has an excellent reputation. Yes, they do have competition - the local transmission shop. IF you can find one that will do rebuild on ZF (not easy), chances are it'll cost more, and I'll bet they don't do many. I've had tranny rebuilds done, and in general it cost more than Eriksson, and the results weren't very good.
I would NOT go with a used transmission, not unless I knew it had been recently rebuilt. Autoboxes are a problem on the 9000. Many cars get junked because the owner didn't want to pay for a tranny fix. So I'm going to bet that any used transmission may have little or no life left. Even if the seller 'warrantees' it, I'll bet that's just for the part, not the labor to install it. If the used tranny dies in a week, you'll be out $500 for installation, a good part of the way to having bought the quality rebuilt from Eriksson. If the used tranny makes it one day past the warrantee period (if any) then dies, you are screwed.
If you have an otherwise nice car you expect to hold onto, put in the quality rebuilt. You will now have a nice car with a known good tranny. If you expect to dump the car, then stick anything with gears into it and put the ad in the paper quick. But don't think of the car as a bank account - that kills cars. Cars require maintenance to run, and that's a fact of life. If you don't fix this car, what will you buy, and how do you know that car is any better than this one? Or perhaps worse?
Good luck!
