The temp sensor is in the engine coolant, the fan

switch is out on the radiator. If the stat is stuck (they fail both ways, wide open and shut) it will not let much coolant flow except through the heater core for the passenger cabin. If you had maxed out the temp on the ACC and directed it to Defrost vents with max fan speed you would have limped home just under the red line. In emergencies use the little radiator and fan to cool the power plant. Limped 100 miles back home one hot summer day in Indianapolis to the Illinois state line in a 74 99 that way years ago.
