... I wanted to be able to corner at insane speeds (and wanted my rather expensive fillings to stay in my teeth for a while). I fitted the Abbott suspension kit.
The original Boge shocks and struts were in great condition (no leaks) and seemed to be working well (smooth, strong damping) when I dumped the rear shocks and cut up the front struts to insert the Konis. The car had seen 113K miles of what I believe was mainly UK and European motorway (highway) driving from the first owner (in only 3 years) followed by about 30K miles of mainly enthusiastic suburban/country driving at my own fair hand. The car wasn't showing any symptoms of worn shocks, but I hated the "crashy" Aero springs. My setup now is much more comfortable, despite outperforming the original setup by a considerable degree.
I don't know whether it makes any difference, but the oil I poured out of the struts was a lovely clean, bright blue colour.
I once drove round the Greater Boston area briefly in a Chevy Impala and didn't feel a thing. But then again, I decided its suspension was made from raspberry jelly (and the lights! How you can see with DOT lighting, I'll never understand!). Still, I can't imagine any road being so hard on the Aero suspension as to wear it out in less than 100K miles.
However, if you're looking for an excuse to upgrade the suspension for track days, then ditch the standard shocks - they'll have been knackered 90,000 miles ago! Honest :)
