roger:
I had a similar problem with a window mechanism on my 91. Turns out the connector bracket that attatches the regulator to the cable gave out and would not hold the cable tightly any more. I cannot remember the name the dealer gave the piece, but I think he called it a "shuttle".
The motor worked fine until I started messing with it. (More on that later) I bought two shuttles from the dealer for less than $20. Getting to the window shuttles was not too bad, as mentioned in other posts in this thread. If this is the problem, then there is no real reason to remove the motor and cable assembly. Just make sure the window doesn't drop as you are working on it.
The motor assembly, to me, looks just like a strung bow (as in bow and arrow) with the motor in the middle. As stated earlier, my cable got jammed up in there and needed to be rewound. To release the tension, I removed the little plastic retainer/cable guide from the end of the bow portion. It's tight with no play. I fixed the motor problems, then put the cable retainer back into the end of the bow section. Really needed two sets of hands, but my foot did the trick ok. Seems to work fine now.
Good luck and happy wrenching.
