Noticed your post of a couple of weeks ago, and wondered how the search was going. The thread was too far gone to add to the post, but I would like to add to those who like the 9k. I am currently an owner of my 5th Saab, and 2nd and 3rd 9ks.
I think they are a big step up in performance from the 900, you will be pleased. They are more complicated in design, and thus more vulnerable to problems, and perhaps more costly. I say perhaps, because I have had less problems with my 9ks than my 900 and 99. And they are easier to maintain. When problems do come up, they can be costly.
I'm surprised that no one mentioned having to drop the tranny to change the clutch. $$$$$ Ditto for the slave. I think the tranny itself is much stronger than the 900. The Climate Control is an expensive piece of gagetry that is bound to fail, and even used will set you back several hundred.
I too was biased against the 9000 when it first came out. Not a real Saab, the shape looked like a Honda, the key was on the column,.... Then I drove one. Wow! Big improvement in handling over the 900. I'm kinda of looking forward to trying the 9-5, in another 5 yrs or so, to see what has improved over the 9000.
If you can swing it, I'd go for a '95 or later. The gear ratios are nicer, and I think they made a fair number of improvements to make it worth your while. Don't be afraid of buying one out of your area. These cars are worth traveling for, and a very good buy can come to he who waits for the right car. Do have a knowledgeable 9k mechanic go over the car. They know what to look for and can save you thousands. If you need help in the Ann Arbor MI area, let me know.
