Successfully installed aftermarket radio w/ factory amp

I searched around quite a bit and couldn't find any data on whether it was possible to use the factory amp with an aftermarket receiver, so I experimented a bit last night and succesfully installed a new head-unit and DVD player in my 97 9000CS. The outputs from the factory radio were low level twisted-pair. I soldered these to RCA cables and plugged those into the preamp outputs of my new receiver, and it worked but there was a loud hum. I then soldered all the grounds from the 4 RCA cables together and attached that to a bolt to ground it to the car, and the hum disappeared. My new head unit has an aux input, so I installed a cheap DIN dvd player into the free DIN slot, and connected the audio outputs to the head unit. I'll pick up some cheap LCD screens to add to the back of the headrests when I have a chance. Anyway, the job took about 1.5 hours, but saved me from having to install a new amp.
