Fair, with caveats Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: What's a fair price for a clean 88 9000s?, mario, Tue, 30 Apr 2002 18:17:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I agree with most of Quasi's points - the auto is an issue. If it's the original auto, it will probably need expensive work soon. If the tranny has been recently done, that's to the good. As to only 130K - I have a '88 9000T in the mid-130's, and I can vouch for the originality. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't do your homework.
If the car is in good shape, and all the systems check out, then it's a very good price. Where else are you going to get a leather-seated/power-windowed ABS-equipped turbocharged car for the price of the sunroof/wheel option package on most Hondas?
If the car needs work, has a flakey transmission, bad heater core, and the timing chain is worn down to a nub, free is too much money for what will shortly become a lawn ornament.
If the car looks really clean, with nice interior and clean engine compartment, you can be sure that the guy spent $75 at the detailer. Look deeper - how is the exhaust system? What does the oil look like? Is there any? Crawl around underneath, and look closer at that freshly cleaned engine compartment - any sign of cobbled-together repairs? Tied off hoses, muffler bandages, wires to nowhere? How are the repair/maintenance records? No maintenance records, then find another car. It's so much easier to sell a pretty, shiny car with bum mechanicals than a so-so looking car that runs well and strong.
There are times I think it's better to buy a used car at night, preferably in the rain. You don't want to get taken by shiny paint. I like to start with the assumption that the seller is trying to rob me blind with a junker, and make the car prove itself in many different ways.
But then again, I'm cynical.
Good luck.
