Yup, he makes it sound simple, doesn't he? And maybe it is for him, because he does a lot of them. But for me, it was a real bitch. That's why I'm asking ... what trick am I missing? Next time I do it, I'll try to apply a little more zen. And perhaps a better pair of snap ring pliers. I've done a few CV joints, and I've always had trouble with that snap ring. The manuals make it sound so straight-forward, but I've always found it murky in the depths of that grease-filled joint.
BTW, I think the Audi 100 pioneered these joints. They were called Rzeppa joints back then, after the talented Czech who invented them. These things are an absolute marvel of design, as well as a marvel of machining technology. The tolerances are so demanding that they can't stand any dirt or grit. One of these days I'll document the intracacies of the design on my site, because these things really are a technological wonder. It's like phonograph records or CD's or pumping concrete ... if you really think about it, you say, "Nah, that'll never work!".
