Are your gauges r134a gauges? With both high and low side fittings? You need to be able to monitor high and low side pressures at the same time. The thing to watch for is the quality of the high side coupler. If you try to fit a cheap coupler onto a high side schrader valve when the high side is above static pressure, you can have real trouble. The cheapest I have seen gauges are around $80, and that was for interdynamics.
The reason that you need the gauges eventhough someone else is going to vacuum and fill is that when you start to monitor the integrity of the system (mostly for leaks), you need to be able to see the pressures.
If you have an air compressor, you might consider getting the air venturi type vacuum pump (harbor freight tools has one for like $11 that looks just like the one I paid $65 for). Then you can do everything but evacuating refrigerant yourself.
I have never used ac flush solvent because mineral spirits are $2.50/gallon.
Did you read the Townsend write up on converting? There are some parts of it which are a little complicated, such as the oil injector, but I used that the first time I did this.
