Not sure what you saw on the Townsend site. The saab manual makes no real distinction between model year with respect to valve body. Larger issue is whether turbo or not.
What you are experiencing may be engine surge which, on the 3-4 upshift, is also a sign of a weak accumulator A spring. The first question is whether this happens with the accelerator depressed a little less than half way, or if it happens even when you push the pedal to the floor. If it happens at half pedal, but not full pedal, you may be able to improve this by a slight adjustment of the kickdown cable.
The manual has a specific part number for a stronger spring. However, the first thing I would check is the kick down cable. Try tightening it a little bit by pulling the housing down in the clamp. You will see what I mean when you look at it. A little bit here goes a long way. Pay attention to shifting in other gears to see if tightening the kickdown cable screws up the shift points in the other gears. I have been trying to improve the 3-4 upshift on my car by various methods and I still don't have it figured out.
One last thing to check is the small vacuum hose which goes from the metal air intake pipe to the front of the valve body cover on the trasmission. This allows the transmission to adjust for turbo boost, and if it's cracked, supposedly you get funny symptoms.
