It is not a misconception. Perhaps it is, though, a difference in terminology. I did not intend to suggest that the speakers distort with a lower power amp. Rather, it is the other way around.

As you note, speakers, depending on efficieny, require more or less power to move. Some speakers, like the Kappas, take a lot of power to move. Running the Kappas off the internal amp in a car radio is a bad plan because even at moderate volume the amp will be overstressed. This is doubly so if the amp has to reproduce the frequency range of a cd as opposed to FM radio. So, while the kappas may sound great at 1 watt of clean power from your car radio, you will need a stethescope to hear it. If you want to have enough volume to hear the kappas without distortion, you will need more power to cleanly produce that level of output.

The bigger the amp, the more headroom you have, and the better it will tend to sound (less distortion) at lower output (volume). Also, a bigger amp will require less stress to produce the desired output, and will run cooler and probably longer. So, 75w/c may have the capacity to be louder than required, but it wil sound better for longer at the same output as an equal quality amp with half the power.

Stated differently, if you try to run Infinity Kappas off the amp in your car radio, they will tend to sound like crap. Because the amp in the radio can't handle the power requirement of the speakers. Which I know from experience. On the other hand, if you hook those same 4" kappas to a 75 watt per channel amp, crossed over at 80hz, they will sound excellent. Which I also know from experience. Of course, the radio that I hooked the kappas up to was a Kenwood with a rated 4x25w output, or something like that, which is really more like 4x8w. Newer radios have more rated power, though I think the principle remains the same.

The reason I said I probably disagree to begin with is because I don't know what kind of power the amp in a 1998 9000 produces. Could be it's enough. Or not.
