Doubt the colour has anything to do with it

However, yes, an Aero (especially if it's a manual) is more likely to be driven hard. This opinion is based purely on the fact that I bought a manual Aero specifically so I could drive it hard.
These cars can stand up to a lot of abuse, though. The engines don't really wear out so much as get (a) broken or (b) neglected. Any car can be neglected, so the Aero is no more or less liable to suffer this than any other 9000. If the engine's not broken, then chances are that you won't see any signs of wear.
The only thing that might suffer abuse and that will display damage is the gearbox. Try some fairly quick changes. If you get crunching, then the transmission might have been abused (or the clutch has a problem). Remember, though, that the 9000 gearbox isn't great for quick changes anyway, so don't expect too much if you try some very quick shifts.
Check, too, for signs of overheating. This might indicate a cooling system or head gasket problem.
Basically, the 9000 in all its forms is mechanically very robust. It's the little things, like electrics and gadgetry (and the odd bit of hydraulics), that let the side down.
It is a known fact, though (well, a widely-held opinion, anyway), that a bright red car is more likely to attract the attention of the local constabulary (that's "highway patrol" if you live "stateside").
