Robert has a good diagnostic procedure. My guess is that you have a fuel injector that isn't fully closing sometimes. Oil and coolant burns have very distinctive smells and tend to be present during the normal operation of the car - leading to very characteristic deposits on both the tailpipe and sparkplugs. A fuel injector can have an intermittant fault sealing and still function while the car is running, and also not show up in either of these places after the car has warmed up. It is also consistent with the initial high idle you observe.
Since the problem is intermittant, you may get lucky by pulling the sparkplugs. I would also recommend pulling the injector bank to check the spray patterns and the shutoffs. I personally have never done this on a 9K, but on my OG 900s with the old Bosch Jetronic systems, it was not a problem, but it is time consuming and the manifold to injector seals should be replaced before refitting. Since you state that the dealer does your work, I would discuss this with him and see how much it costs and whether you and he feel that it is worth it - particularly since you are planing to sell the car.
