Thanks all, esp. recce on a skilled Saab-repair. 3hr drive is no out of line. (I like Service Above & Beyond here in town, but recent results there have been worrisome.)
If anyone's still following this old a thread, the cable moves freely. The frozen-pad theory might work, though I've had the caliper/pads apart, wire brushed everything and put together DRY. (I found out recently that anti-seize on the sliding-pins is recommended.) I'm pretty sure this is the classic piston-meets-crud-ring or worn-piston-going-diagonal kind of situation.
That's why I thought thicker pads might return us to a clear working range. But I'm always worried about fixating on a single solution, hence my asking you.
Thanks again, if I get a chance to report on the final cause, I
ll put it here.
