9000 Salvage or fix decision...salvage values? (long)

About two months ago, I realized that my 91 9000 S needed some work. The amount of the work involved was likely going to cost about what the car was worth. After deciding that the car was worth more to me than to anyone else, I elected to start doing the work. With most of the work completed (including some major stereo upgrades inspired by our own Aaron Gilbert) I was feeling quite proud of my decision to stick witht the car. Yesterday all that changed. While driving on the interstate with my pregnant wife (due date today!) the oil light came on and I had an almost immediate loss of power. Turns out...the balance chain snapped. The estimate from the local shop is around $1,500 to just do the balance chain, but the prudent 9000 owner with more than 122,000 miles on his/her car would probably get a new timing chaing since everything is already opened up. That gets me to a $2,000 repair bill on a car that isn't worth much more than $3,500 in working condition. Don't get me wrong, its a very clean car that has had excellent care. Its just that the market for 12 year old non-turbo 9000s is a bit grim.
So, here's the question. What would a car like this be worth if I tried to sell it without fixing it? Obviously it would have to be towed as it in not drivable. It would be a great car for a donor engine and would be an over the top parts car for another 91-92 9000. I haven't decided whether to do the work or not. Part of me says, hey you already spend 2,500 in A/C, SRS, DI cassette and assundry other parts...stick it out. The other part says, you have always disliked the lack of power with this car, scrap it and get a mid-90s Aero.
Advice?
Thanks for letting me get this out.
