Why do you think the balance chain caused the problem?

If the balance chain snapped, it would wrap around the timing chain, break the timing chain, cause valves to be smashed by the pistons and bring your motor to a halt in very short order. So, from your description, it doesn't sound like a balance chain break.

However, a tooth from the balance chain crankshaft sproket could have broken off, flowed directly into the oil pump gears and wreaked havoc. I would expect this to cause a catastrophic loss of oil pressure. Two miles is a long was to go with this condition.

The reason that it makes a difference what happened is because the repair scenarios are different. For the breaking chain scenario, you would need to replace the balance and timing chain compenents and some valves. It may not cost you that much to do this yourself. On the other hand, if oil starvation shut you down, the motor is pretty well finished.

A used motor for a 91 non-turbo is not that expensive. I bet you could get one installed (by someone else) for $1,200 - $1,500 depending where you are. Before installing a used motor, though, I would definitely open up the valve cover and timing cover to check the chains and sprockets.
