mystery switch theory.... please anybody!

As in my previous posts, I just swapped 5speed trannys' in my 88 9kt. The new one was from an 87 9kt (which I knew there was going to be problems with, but I needed the car). My original tranny has 2 switches on the end plate, and the new one only has one. One is for reverse... the other I can find no reference for.
My theory is this: since the new tranny was installed, I have no turbo boost to the engine, yet the turbo is getting red hot indicating overworking, and I also have no shift up light anymore. Is it possible that this other switch tells the computer that the car is indeed in gear, activating the computer for the upshift light and allowing the turbo vacuum switch to operate? I came to this assumption remembering that when the car is in neutral, and the engine revved, the turbo boost was minimal, just as it does now.And also no shift light when in neutral...
If anybody has any insights, I would be appreciative!
Thanks,
Steve
