Gentlemen. This is long winded...
I've been waiting (a little bit) to hear about a chain snap that did not damage the engine.
I have a 1992 black and tan beauty with rebuilt motor due to chain snap and resulting cracked block and of course the interference of valves and pistons. $4300 later we have a 1-year warranty and love our car again. As far as I have been told, the chain should give warning noises. Not so in my case!!!
I am looking at another 1992 for sale since my wife will not take turns with our other car ( 1983 BMW 528e). I must be a glutton for punishment but the 9000 is sooo nimble and fast I need another one. The chain has not broken on the vehicle I am interested in. According to my wrench guys $1500 to replace it all correctly including tensioners, head gaskets, ...(sorry I forgot). The seller says one can roll a new chain on for about $500 - a one year solution according to my wrench.
You are lucky your chain did not damage the block, pistons, and valves - just keep an eye on performance and leaks in block.
We're saabing(sorry) over this expense. This is my 3rd Saab - and the sick thing is the guys here say the GM vintage Saabs are "better" as far as reliability than the older ones. As I read the high mileage list on this site I see mostly 900s - very few 9000s unfortunately. At least it's not as bad as owning a boat.
