Robert, yes the problem could also be a battery or cable related problem. you just want to eliminate those areas first. as for special tools, no. you'll need either a 13mm or 14mm wrench for the starter bolts.(can't recall) 13mm for batt. lead and 8mm for ignition lead. I've replaced the starter 4 times on my '87 9000S since 1992. the first time, i considered rebuilding it myself. turns out it needed the solenoid switch. (cylindrical component against the start motor) cured the problem for 3 months before the starter went out. My advice, just replace it. too much trouble and time to rebuild. get a rebuilt unit and warranty. the starter that is currently on my 9000 is in its 4th year. I paid $35.00 for it from a SAAB used parts supplier.
