The joint does not need to be removed from the hub, but you *do* have to remove the shaft from the joint. There are some kits out there with "split" boots that you can slip over the joint and then glue together, but they have a reputation for not lasting.
Maybe one of the other folks on the BBS has some photos of the procedure? It's not really very hard, just have to undo the lower balljoint which is easy (it's not one of those impossible-to-separate taper-fit ones).
