This relates back to some postings made 2 or 3 weeks ago about problems caused by switching to synthetic oil in 96CS with 100K. To make a long story short - lost oil pressure on way to dealer; they pulled valve cover and found much loosened old oil deposits. Remedy was to drop pan "clean oil pump intake screen" - flush loose deposits with diesel - pour oil over exposed engine parts - refill w/ 4 liters. oil(non-syn) run - drain, refill, new filter run again, check pan & screen - put it back together.
All this was completed.
Stopped by yesterday to test drive car. Engine was very noisy reminded me of an old '53 Chevy straight-six with solid lifters). However, was not nearly as loud as when lost the oil pressure 3 weeks ago. Prior to this problem engine was pretty tight - not driven hard at all.
Engine now sounds as if it's starved for oil. I fear that perhaps damage could have been done when lost oil pressure or as a result of the cleaning (althoguh think precautions were taken).
Questions:
1. Is there a simple way to check to see if am getting proper oil pressure - suspect low pressure even though oil light is not on.
2. Would a weakened/damaged oil pump cause low pressure and still perform?
3. Do you need to "remove the timing chain cover" to replace oil pump or can you do it just by dropping oil pan?
4. This one I don't like - what is the probability that this engine has simply just been wrecked? Realize that's a tough one without seeing & listening to car but am wondering if this is what happens frequently when you suffer loss of oil pressure i.e. severe engine wear in a very short time.
Am trying to determine if it's worth pursuing a fix for the engine.
