BrianZ is right, that you can and should make the change if you plan on keeping the car indefinitely, and that 2-3 frequent changes would be advisable at the outset. My Aero at 36k when purchased had seen no synthetic oil, and after the first change with Royal Purple I changed again 3k later and performed a lab test. This revealed as suspected that the new oil was cleaning the sludge and varnish from several years of fossil oil use, and after the second change 3k later it was still cleaning. The lab advised me to go to a 10k interval at that time, and at that change I tested again, revealing that the oil was still good and that contamination relatively low, but the presence of non-wear elements that are not present in RP oil revealed that it was still cleaning. The moral is that two quick changes may do it, but three would be better before settling in on an extended drain interval.
R&T magazine advised in their Technical Correspondence column several years ago that fossil oil should be changed at 3k intervals, but synthetic could go 15k or longer, with 10k being a conservative compromise. I now change at 10k intervals and feel safe doing so. However, if you make frequent short trips that tax the oil's TBN (total base number), a reflection of its ability to absorb acids, you may want to change more frequently. Also, driving in dusty areas or doing frequent idling are other reasons to change more often.
