>> I recall in an article (or is it their web site?) that the engineer who developed the first batch indicated that the oil was so special it should have a color distinction from other oils.

That's very interesting, as I hadn't heard that before. I just assumed the color came first, then the name--but apparently it was the desire for a distinctive color first, then the name, and finally the color.

>> BTW is Amsoil and Mobil 1 similar colors? Never seen Amsoil before.

A few years ago, I bought two quarts of Amsoil 20w50 racing oil from a Harley dealer's clearance sale for $1, and it was bright red like ATF. I used it in my mower, which shouldn't be an insult to Amsoil since I now use RP 20w50, what I also use in my Harley. It is excellent oil, by all accounts, and unlike my car and bike my other machinery can get a bargain synthetic if I run across it. I'm very picky about what goes in the first two, however: The car gets 15w40 and the bike a 50:50 mix of 20w50 and RP Nitro 50 racing oil. The latter is Jody Williams' personal formula for his motorcycle, and after using it for four years and 72k miles, driven through 30 states, the engine on this bike runs like new, plus very cool (oil temp never more than 180°F). The Nitro 50 is loaded with anti-friction and protective additives and is designed for nitro-methane-burning dragsters. Oops, off on a tangent again! There is a story behind using this formula, but I won't go into that here since most people are probably bored with my verbose oil dialog by now anyway.

As I recall, M1 is nearly clear, and is an excellent product. I always include it in any recommendations I make, citing its availability as a big plus. I just think RP is better, and I buy from a distributor who delivers it to my door at a discount price. My preference is to buy by the 5-gal. pail, which makes the API oil only about $3.50/qt. I also use RP gear oil in the Harley's tranny, but the primary gets Harley primary oil because of its proprietary nature to lubricate the primary chain yet provide adequate friction for the clutch plates. I tried RP once but it was too slick, causing the clutch to engage too slowly, then grab.
