1)It could be a failed tensioner assembly. Early versions used a press fit to secure the tensioner pivot shaft to the backing plate, later versions have a snap ring for good measure. It could be a failed idler pulley, something that the screeching sound might indicate. It could be one of the accessories has failed and is throwing the belt. If nothing else is bad, the serpentine belt *will not* come off in one piece.
2) Impossible to know. Presumably your wife stopped once the temperature spiked, and a new engine would handle this without a problem. Yours is 8 or 9 years old, and if things were already weaked by age, this coule be the push over the edge.
3) The water pump is powered by the belt. Without circulation, boiling in the engine will pump the fluid out the pressure cap.
4) No matter how old and worn, the belt will not be thrown off without something else being bad.
5) Worst case: a siezed a/c compressor. Thousands. Best case: a siezed idler pulley. $50 (or less) for the pulley, then the belt and installation. Middle case: bad tensioner.
6) Whenever the belt is replaced, the idler pulleys should also be replaced. If the tensioner spring is weak, have the tensioner replaced as well. The spring does eventually weaken and fail, I'm told (by Saab Master Techs.)
