Well, Amsoil isn't alone in publishing graphs with weak details. Royal Purple's old brochure shows similar graphs with no detailing for the x or y axis, with comparative products listed as "conventional oil" and "synthetic oil." Only by some personal digging did I determine what these actually were.
Frankly, I doubt if K&N would care enough to seek vengeance even if they felt the claims were erroneous. They sell plenty of filters and I doubt if Amsoil's filter, even if better, would put much of a dent in K&N's overall sales considering the difficulty of finding them.
Do they make an OEM-replacement for the 9K? If it indeed costs less, filters and flows better, and a model exists that replaces the OEM filter, I'd say it would be a great buy. The question for me is, how long will the filter element last? You said you kept one for 13 years, which is certainly long enough. K&N claims "up to one million miles" for their filters, whatever that is supposed to mean. After all, five miles fits that criterion. If I didn't already have a K&N, I'd seriously look into the Amsoil filter.
