know that when I changed to synthetic about 5 years ago and my car started smoking on start up, the Cam box started leaking and the crank seal started dripping within 1000 miles that it wasn't the oil that I used. After this occurred, I contacted Castrol and they said that If I switched back to fosil oil, the problem MAY correct itself. They STRONGLY recommend AGAINST changing to Synthetic oil if the car had over 5 years or 50,000 miles. Guess they were wrong but I did what they recommended, switched back to fosil, and the leaks almost stopped (except for the valve seals). Seems to have somethinhg to do with the molecular strucrure difference between fosil and scientific lubricants and the space between the seals and the surfaces being sealed. Maybe that isn't true any more. Because of that experience I will not use synthetic in older cars unless they started life with synthetic. Once was enough to make me a believer.
