These days virtually all batteries are maintenance free hybrid type. The voltage regulator you have as another reader pointed out is already an elctronic type (Bosch actually). The Bosch regs charge at 14.3V at 15C. However they charge voltage rapidly drops off with increasing temperature. There are 2 problems. Firstly my view is that the charge volts are conservative (your article backs this up). This is usually done as too higher a charge voltage can reduce battery life. Secondly the reg senses its own temp and uses this to adjust volts. Unfortunately the temp at the alternator will normally be higher than the battery temperature. Consequently when you are driving along at highway speeds with the engine up to operating temp the volts drop back to 13.6 or so.

Ideally you would install a reg with a slightly higher charging voltage right next to the battery. However in practice this is not that easy. I do not even know if anyone other than Bosch sells a reg that will fit its alternators. If you were really keen you could modify the Bosch reg just to use the brushes and wire this to another reg mounted next to the battery.

In your case I think that your battery is on the way out and the easiest fix is just to replace it.
