Woe is Me - Possible head gasket failure (long)

Well, my trusty 1993 Aero is going under the knife today to figure out what's wrong. She drank a gallon of coolant between Friday and Monday, with none of it actually leaking out of the car. Steam's coming from the tailpipe more than usual and theres some hesitation at startup. Otherwise the car runs fine. I hope it isnt the head gasket and some simple problem i havent thought of or heard of, but i dont think that will be the case. I dont think its the heater core because i cranked up the heater to test that and there was no steam or coolant smell. Also, I changed my oil last week and didnt find any signs of coolant in the oil. Sigh. Guess i'll have to wait for the guys in the shop to get back to me (I work at my Saab dealer so the financial pinch will not be as bad as for the mere mortals, lol)
