I had this problem very soon after getting my 92 9k 2.3t, the light came on for "check radiator" ,or whatever, and kept doing it even after topping up and adding some bars leaks.
I started the engine with the bonnet up, in the end, and watched the collant level slowly rise in the header tank then blow out the top. This explained why I never saw a puddle but kept loosing it. There was no evidence of water in the oil, but a bit of oil in the water. Popping the spark plugs out made it obvious that the head gasket was to blame, number 1 cylinder had a little puddle in it.
Nice thing about these engines is you can see straight in the top with the spark plug out...
Hope this is some help.
