Andrew,
If the noise sounds is of the "click clack" variety, the it is probably from the lifters (followers). If it is more of a grinding noise, coming from the left hand side of the valve cover (when facing the car) then it is probably the chain. If it is a chain noise, I would recommend replacing the tensioner with the new style and also the upper chain guide, which is located in the valve cover. Both are quite cheap and easy. If it is lifters, it may not be a big deal, but it shouldn't make a noticable noise once warmed up. Remember also that the injectors make a degree of noise. Can you hear it while in the car, or just with the hood up? What viscosity of oil do you run, and has it been changed regularly? Theoil nipples do get brittle (I broke two inspecting the assembly) but won't likely fall apart when in place. The young lady at the dealer's part counter did seem amused when my invoice stated (2 nipples). Do check them when the valve cover is off. I believe some of the part houses sell kits that include all necesary nipples and fittings quite inexpensively, so it certainly wouldn't hurt to replace them and clean the assembly.
Good luck,
Craig
