Do I have a bad alternator, Ari, Anybody?

Hi Guys,
Haven't posted for a while.
I have just done a search for alternator problems but can't really find an answer to my specific problem.
My car - 1987 9000 SE Turbo automatic (UK specification).
The problem: Battery is discharging and not being supplied with voltage by the alternator. However, my charge light does NOT come on, even when I run the warning bulb checks via the ignition key (right past the start position). I removed the dash top yesterday and managed to get the instrument cluster out far enough to pull the "charge" bulb. You have to be a contortionist with very thin arms to do this easily - not a big heavy guy like me! The bulb itself looked OK and just to make sure I did a temporary swap with the "ABS" bulb. ABS bulb is 1.2 Amps and Charge bulb seems to be 2 Amps. This did NOT fix the problem.
This basically leaves the "supply" wire between the bulb and the alternator field coils or the alternator itself. I charged the battery overnight so that at least I can drive the car "on battery" for a short time. I am sure that the "charge" light was glowing dimly this morning which would suggest that there is some kind of continuity between the bulb and the alternator.
I am confused now and don't really know how to proceed. Do I need a new alternator? Can anybody out there suggest what I need to do now to resolve this problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
STEVE
